Welcome to our page! We would like to introduce ourselves to you. We are Barb and Steve Allen of Verona, N.Y. After over 35 years in the retail business Barb wanted to follow a lifetime dream of owning my own deli. After 12 years as Operations Manager for a local convenience store owner, she resigned in 2008 to follow that dream. In March 2008 Rt. 31 Express Inc. was born on Rt. 31 in Verona, N.Y. It was such a small store that our customers called it " Barb's closet", but to us it was the start of something great. This little store offered the freshest of deli meats, subs made with fresh baked breads, and many specialty items. There is an emphasis on local items like VVS Maple Syrup, 81080 bbq sauce from Sherrill, Glazier hotdogs from Potsdam, and River Rat cheese.
After a very successful year, the store was moved in March of 2009 to Main St in Verona, It was in the Freihofer building with plenty of space to expand. It was then that my husband Steve resigned from Coca-Cola to join the business. It was with his help that we were able to offer even more home-made goods, penny candy and specialty items. We have developed a few signature food items along the way, like carrot cake, potato bacon chowder, macaroni and potato salad. This small deli became the home town store, with all the offerings of a full convenience store. Customers related it to "Cheers" where everyone knows your name. When you stopped by you knew that you were welcome. One of our most precious moments was helping a grandmother who was down on her luck, and had to raise her three grandchildren. Out of desperation she came to the deli for help, with the generous help of our customers she was back on track within a couple of weeks. We enjoy giving back to the customers who support us. We help raise hundreds of dollars for the local food pantry each year, as well as many other contributions to people in need. Our store became the hub of Verona, when someone had a question or need they came to the deli. The local politicians asked for our help with getting the sewer system approved by the local residents. It was our pleasure to be instrumental in getting such an improvement to our small town. After 4 and a half years of business we lost our lease in the Freihofer building which forced us to find another location. In October of 2013 we closed in Verona and looked for a new location.
We re-opened on November 11,2013 at our present location 147 Cedar St. Oneida, N.Y. The new store is smaller but still charming with its retro feel and friendly faces. We no longer offer a full line of groceries but have expanded our food offerings, and still have our local specialties. We are open Mon.-7AM-5PM Tuesday thru Friday 8AM-5PM,offering a variety of sweet breads, home-made soups, salads, pizza, and the best subs in the area.
February 2018 we sold the deli to Marcia Polisse so that we could retire. Marcia has spent time with us learning the business. She now owns the deli and welcomes you to come in and see the new items she has added. She hopes to give you all the same quality choices you're all used to and many more. Please stop by and welcome Marcia to her new business.
